The deluded citizens of Ballyionosphere believe that they have been sent to colonize an obscure corner of outer space that is not dissimilar in appearance to Ireland. When they are not engaged in subsistence farming or “terraforming” as they call it, the inhabitants collect any materials available and construct huge and ornate radio antennae with which they hope to send a signal to the mothership (Dáil Éireann) for help. They are particularly interested in festivals and invade them as often as possible so that they can utilise what they believe to be the excellent signaling frequencies of Heras fencing. Despite a limited understanding of radiography, great faith is placed in the antennae which are treated with religious reverence. Their main hope is that the space tractor will one day come and bring them home to the bog.
